Is CEVO a good alternative to Umax?
Yes. The free scan tells you your face shape and what suits it, in plain words. The Complete Clinical Dossier adds a glow-up and up to 3 hairstyles on your own face and a 90-day routine, paid once. If you want an app you open every day, Umax is built for that.
Is Umax accurate?
Its store page does not say how scores are worked out. Reviewers are split.
Is Umax free?
Free to download, but its US App Store page says results need a weekly or monthly subscription, and extra scans cost extra. Reviewers say three invited friends also unlock a scan.
How do I cancel Umax?
On iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Umax, Cancel Subscription. On Android: Google Play, Subscriptions, Umax, Cancel subscription. Google says uninstalling the app does not cancel it.

Umax's prices, as the App Store lists them
The US App Store page for Umax - Become Hot lists these in-app purchases, in US dollars. It does not say which weekly or monthly price a new user is offered, and we found no free trial on the page. The description adds: “analysis results require subscription. Additional scans require additional purchase.”
| In-app purchase | Prices listed (USD) |
|---|---|
| Weekly Premium | $3.99 · $4.99 · $6.99 · $9.99 |
| Monthly Premium | $9.99 · $12.99 · $24.99 |
| You as a 10/10 | $6.99 |
| Supercharge (not described on the store page) | $3.99 |
Reviewers mention paying about $3 to $5 for a scan; one Google Play review says a re-scan costs another $3.99.
CEVO's reports are paid once: $29, $59 or $119.
Umax's privacy labels

- Tracking: on the App Store, the developer, Improvement Tech, says usage data may be used to track you across other companies' apps and websites.
- Data collected: photos or videos and usage data (App Store, not linked to you); personal info, photos and videos, and app performance (Google Play), with nothing shared with third parties and data encrypted in transit.
- Deletion: Google Play says you can ask for your data to be deleted. The App Store rates the app 18+; Google Play rates it Everyone.
Why the same face can give different results

A phone held at arm's length (about 30 cm) draws the nose about 4% wider and the jaw about 3% narrower, because the nose is closer to the lens. From about 1.5 m the change almost disappears (Ward et al. 2018; Třebický et al. 2016; see our selfie distance study). CEVO reads the size of your iris to tell when a photo is too close and asks for a retake instead of correcting the face.
Face proportions also differ between groups of people (Farkas et al. 2005), and researchers still disagree on any single formula for beauty (Naini et al. 2006). That is why CEVO's free scan tells you your face shape and what suits it in plain words.
